Mastering is the last creative step in the record making process.  A mastering engineer is selected to review the mixed masters and make overall dynamic and EQ adjustments as s/he feels are best suited for the project. Most recording engineers prefer that another set of ears, someone that is outside of the project, add their touch to the overall sound.
